Interior Designing as a Career: Eligibility, Pay Scale and Skills Needed

  • Dec 08, 2021

The increasing trend of construction in developed and developing economies is likely to increase the demand for interior design services. Construction activities across the world, improvements in the standard of living, and rising incomes of the population are attributed to be driving the market.

Consumer experience and leisure activities are changing in the current scenario across the globe. As people are getting rich, they are buying new homes or renovating the existing space. This is where interior designers and architectures come into play.

Interior designers are responsible for planning, designing, and furnishing the internal space of rooms or buildings. They design interior environments or create physical layouts that are practical, aesthetic, and conducive to the intended purposes.

Interior design does not necessarily mean designing and planning residence interiors and other living spaces. There are several career opportunities in interior designing from which one can choose, such as furniture designers, exhibition designers, lighting designers, kitchen designers, architects, architectural technologists, product designers, textile designers, stylists, and production designers.

If you are creative, detail-oriented, and love to decorate the space around you, then, Interior Designing as a career may be your true calling!

But before you make a decision, here is some information about the industry that every aspiring candidate must know in advance.

Eligibility Criteria of Interior Designers

While most interior designers need at least a bachelor's degree to begin working, students who are interested in becoming interior designers can start their training with classes available to them in high school. Classes like home economics and art can give students a taste of what the work is like to help them determine if they are committed to the career and can give them basic skills that will make their undergraduate study easier.

Popular interior design degrees to pursue in college are B. Sc, B.A, Bachelor of Design, and Master of Design. Certificate and diploma courses in the field act as an added advantage, so do internships and part-time jobs.

Skills and Qualities of an Interior Designer

  1. A knack for apt design: It is understood that to become an interior designer, one should have a knack for design elements such as color, spatial arrangements, architecture, and textiles.
  2. Communication skills: Apart from design skills, an interior designer must also develop a great harmony between interpersonal and communication skills, to maintain a good network with the clients, contractors, and suppliers.
  3. Eye for detail: To be an exceptional interior designer, one needs to have an eye for detail, a natural understanding of colors, and intuition about space, harmony, and balance, and a keen eye.
  4. Keeping up with the trend: Interior design has become a competitive business. One needs to keep up with the latest trends and technological advancements to gain the upper hand in the job market.

Work Environment and Pay Scale of Interior Designer

Most interior designers work in offices, but technology has changed the way many designers work.

Interior designers can be independent contractors who need to build a client base, or can work for an established design firm. In either case, they need to build a positive reputation in the industry in order to secure future work.

In order to do so, they may need to adjust their workday to suit their clients’ schedules and deadlines, including meeting with clients in the evening and on weekends.

An interior designer is paid based on the level of creativity and experience he/she has.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated an average yearly income of $57,060 for interior designers in 2020. It should be noted that most designers start out at a low salary and receive raises based on their ability to create good work and satisfy clients.

The Demand for Interior Designers Soar High

With the rising expenditure on quality life by people across the globe and their rising exposure to far-off places/exotic destinations, the need for interior designers is at an all-time high. Further, due to the rapid increase in population and a paradigm shift in family structures (from joint to nuclear), the per capita land consumption is decreasing by the day.

These factors have made effective and efficient use of the limited space not just a choice, but the need of the hour.

Thus, interior designing is emerging as a booming career option for people with a creative bent of mind.
